A Victory for LIFE: Texas Governor Passes Bill Banning Tax-Payer Funded Abortion

Earlier today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott successfully passed a new law that would limit insurance coverage for abortions, just one of many steps towards the goal of ending government-approved genocide.

Under House Bill 214, Texans will no longer be forced to pay for elective abortions through their insurance plans and specifically includes an exemption for cases of medical emergency in which the life of the mother is threatened.

“As a firm believer in Texas values I am proud to sign legislation that ensures no Texan is ever required to pay for a procedure that ends the life of an unborn child.

This bill prohibits insurance providers from forcing Texas policy holders to subsidize elective abortions. I am grateful to the Texas legislature for getting this bill to my desk, and working to protect innocent life this special session.”
— Governor Abbott

Leftist media outlets are labeling HB 214 as "rape insurance" in an attempt to misdirect from the fact that fewer than 0.5% of all abortion cases are due to rape. Republican Representative John Smithee gave this counterpoint:

“This isn’t about who can get an abortion. It is about who is forced to pay for an abortion.”
— Representative John Smithee

Smithee's argument is backed up by a 2000 study, which revealed that of the 30% of women that chose to have abortions after being raped, 78% regretted the decision.

In a further demonstration of the left's disconnect from reality, Democratic Senator Sylvia Garcia fought for exemptions to the bill during the House debate by similarly citing the “rape insurance” line. Her exemptions were defeated in a 20-10 party line vote.

“Just because abortion is legal does not mean that people who have significant moral concerns with the taking of innocent life — as they believe abortion does —- need to pay for it through their health insurance.

Abortion advocates automatically go to the far reaches of hysteria and assume the worst with this kind of legislation: that women won’t be able to get abortions when they want them. Women have access to abortion but those of us who believe it is the intentional ending of a human life shouldn’t have to pay for it.”
— Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood director

While HB-214 is a step in the right direction, there's plenty more work to be done. Republican Senator Brandon Creighton previously authored pro-life bill SB-25, which eliminates “Wrongful Birth” lawsuits.

“A physician who does no wrong to the patient or baby and delivers life that ultimately is disabled is not responsible for compensating the family for the cost of rearing the child.”
— Senator Brandon Creighton

So long as innocent lives hang in the balance, the fight continues.

Stay alert. Stay alive.
