UPDATE: Murder Charges for Suspect in Ambush-Style Slaying of Two Florida Police Officers

August 18 was one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in 2017. Six police officers that were shot in three different U.S. cities last night, with two now dead.

From WFTV 9:

Kissimmee police Officer Matthew Baxter and Sgt. Sam Howard were shot in a scuffle at about 9:30 p.m. at Palmway and East Cypress streets near East Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway and North Main Street, O’Dell said.

Baxter died of his injuries at the scene. Howard succumbed to his injuries at Osceola Regional Medical Center Saturday.

“I am so proud of the sworn and civilian members of our department by acting quickly to identify the suspect and bring him to justice,” said O’Dell in a statement. “We will mourn over the next few day; we will get through this and we love them for what they do.”

The officers were being proactive when they interacted with three people and didn’t handcuff them, O’Dell said.

An Osceola County deputy arrested the suspected gunman, Everett Glenn Miller, 45, at about 11:30 p.m. Friday at Roscoe’s Bar & Package at North Main and Tremont streets, O’Dell said.

A 10-year Florida police veteran, Sergeant Howard is survived by his 9-year-old daughter and wife. Sergeant Howard was shot just two blocks away from a school where his wife works as an elementary school teacher. Prior to entering law enforcement, he was an Army veteran.

Officer Baxter was also a married father of three children, known for participating in community-building events. A three year law enforcement veteran, his wife also serves as a police officer.

Despite all the good things these men stood for, Officer Baxter and Sergeant Howard were brutally ambushed and shot by this animal:

45-year-old Everett Glenn Miller, who recently changed his name from "Malik Mohammad Ali," was found at a local bar by Osceola County sheriff’s detectives just two hours after the slaying. As a tribute to his memory, Officer Baxter's handcuffs were used to restrain Miller.

Reports indicate that Miller was armed with a 9mm handgun and .22 caliber revolver when he was arrested. Miller is a former Marine with prior security experience in Afghanistan.

Investigations into Miller's past revealed an affinity for hateful ideology. On his facebook page, Miller wrote posts declaring "America is evil," calling himself "a racist" and shared content encouraging violence:

“Im the Black Sheep…i dont follow any religion. I dont believe in jesus ..im not a muslim either. I am a spritual being. So all religions are bullsh*t. Made up by man. Black Isrelites (sic)..the new kids on the block …Its a Religion..its made up by white man. I am the original man. My ancestors can be traced back before 1969 when the black Isrelites came on the scene. The belive (sic) that Jesus is coming from heaven with 50 million n*gger angels to kill everyone who isnt a black Isrelites. GTFO.. Thats some real sleep ni$$@. The dont claim to be from Africa. These ni$$@ are really crazy.”
— Everett Miller, in an undated facebook post

Miller is currently being held on charges of premeditated first-degree murder. Authorities expect additional charges to be added in the wake of Sergeant Howard's death.

In a separate incident in nearby Jacksonville, two other police officers were also shot the same evening. 25-year-old Derrick Brabham used a high-powered rifle in his attack and was killed by responding officers:

Of course, in the wake of Brabham's death, bigots across the nation sprung into action to defend their racist narratives. On facebook, one deranged woman wrote "He was a son a best friend a fiance and most importantly a FATHER!!! He did not deserve to be shot 14x and laid out on the concrete for 4 hours while they investigate. That was over kill and the police set him up."

Officer Baxter and Sergeant Howard spent their lives protecting and serving their communities. Their sacrifices will be ignored by anti-police group Black Lives Matter in favor of making martyrs of animals like Miller and Brabham. There is no end in sight.

Stay alert. Stay alive.
