SHOCKER: 37% of Americans Don't Know the First Amendment

Do yourself a favor and read the following carefully. Be sure to commit it to memory, it's important:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Congratulations! You've just taken in the contents of the First Amendment of your American Bill of Rights, which protects your rights to:

  • Establish or practice a religion
  • Freedom of speech and the press
  • Peaceably assemble
  • Petition the Government

New data from 2017 Annenberg Constitution Day Civics Survey reveals that nearly 40% of Americans are either unsure of or simply can't name any of their rights protected by the First Amendment:

United States Chief Justice John Roberts said it best — "You can't fight for your rights if you don't know what they are." Knowing your rights has never been more critical.

YouTube personality Mark Dice exposed the ignorance of Americans four years ago when he hit the streets of Southern California with a fake petition calling for the repeal of the First Amendment. It works disturbingly well.

Remember, many of the people that signed are probably registered voters.
